Three Signs You Should Have Your Microwave Repaired

Blog

Though small, your microwave is one of the most used appliances in your kitchen. It allows you to quickly and easily defrost or cook food while doing other cooking tasks. However, no appliance is completely immune to wear and tear, and your microwave is no exception despite its small size. When this happens, your microwave will exhibit a few different symptoms. Being conscious of a few of the more common signs that your microwave has begun to function improperly can help you figure out when you should talk to an appliance repair specialist about repairing or replacing your current unit.

Timing Issues

The first thing that you are likely to notice when your microwave begins to fail is a substantial increase in the amount of time that it takes for your unit to properly cook food. You may find that a bag of popcorn only has a few popped kernels, or that reheated food has several substantial cold spots within it. This points to your microwave burning out, which will require the replacement of internal heating components of the unit, or the entire replacement of your microwave.

Loud Operation

A microwave that is suffering from mechanical or electrical issues may generate a significant amount of noise while it is turned on. Obviously, a certain amount of noise is normal, but anything out of the ordinary, like popping, banging or clattering can indicate that there is something wrong with your microwave. However, before you get in touch with a professional to inspect your appliance, you should first make sure that the central plate is properly centered. If knocked out of place, it can create a great deal of noise even though your microwave is otherwise operating normally. If that is not the case, however, you should avoid using your microwave until a professional has been able to diagnose the issue.

Door Issues

Finally, the last type of microwave issue that you should watch for is any sort of problem properly sealing the door. A door that does not close all the way, or has gaps in its seal while the microwave is on, can vent heat out of your appliance. As already mentioned, this can affect how well your food is cooked, potentially leading to uneven heating or cold spots developing. However, a door sealing issue also poses a health risk, as the small amount of radiation generated.
